Rescue Me ID: 14-09-18-00032Lucy (female)

Dachshund    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Very Low Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Needs Vaccinations, Blind,
 Seizures, Incontinent

[Read About Natural Incontinence Care] [Read About Natural Seizure Care] Dezi is 8 year old Male Long Hair Mini Dachshund who has been constant companion to Lucy our other 8 yrs old Female Mini Dachshund (with severe medical issues - Liver Shunt & who has also been blind past 5 yrs & on daily antibiotic plus KD wet food only & zero protein diet). We purchased Dezi as soon he was old enough from a Petstore. He came already Neutered just after birth due to some minor surgery. Has a chip as well. He weighs about 11-12 lbs. Dezi has been very healthy his enough life but recently developed allergy to grass this past summer. Dezi's ACTUAL owner is a ... (Read More)special needs autistic individual who since has transitioned to adulthood (moving out of family household but has 24 Provider care) has determined he cannot adequately care for Dezi without it being unfair to Dezi even though he will miss him dearly. I have been caring for Dezi in his behalf the past 4 years with the assistance of my other special needs adult daughter however I am highly allergic to both Cats & as each year has past my allergy to both Dogs has worsened to the point that my physicians are highly encouraging me to find alternative arrangements ASAP for Dezi & his 'sister' as it is NOT fair to either dog nor myself. I was getting some assistance with both dogs by my daughter however she has off & on be neglectful of the dogs needs & has physically abandoned them numerous times over the past 4 years and she ran off again and I am physically disabled as well and I can't give either dog the care & attention they deserve. We also must move in the next 2-3 weeks & I have NOT been able to find a new place which will permit us to have either dog and we have been searching for 4 months for new residence. Dezi is an awesome dog he is VERY affectionate & loves sitting either next to you or even in your lap - when we first got him though he did NOT like to be touched or held and over a few months gained his trust and now each & every day he does expect 'some' lap time. Overall he is a very good dog BUT doesn't like to be alone - he does not like it if he can not be in the same room as you. He loves to run free in our fenced in backyard. He is now a 'barker' because privacy fences prevent him from seeing the dogs in adjacent yards & he barks now in response to their barking. Dezi barks when people 'LEAVE' our home but not necessarily when they arrive (his way of saying hey what about me). Dezi's nickname is 'Scaredy Cat' because he is afraid of certain things such as Large Dogs, he is afraid of smoke detectors, Beeping from the Oven/Stove because he discovered that sometimes when cooking it set off the smoke detectors! We are concerned that UNLESS both dogs are kept together that Lucy will be lost & perhaps die from separating them. Lucy is fortunate to have survived this lone as the vet specialist who performed her Liver Shunt surgery said she would be lucky to live 3 years even with properly feeding. Poor Lucy is a pitiful looking dog because she has lost much of her fur but she is and has been the most loving dog we have ever had. She has been a real trooper yet since she lost her vision she is much less active (spending a tremendous amount of time in her box). She has 1-2 'spurts' a day where she will run free in the back yard for about 5 minutes then search for us by listening to our voice to take her back inside. She comes out of her box inside the house 1-2 times a day and (prior to feeding) as well as when she is seeking some lap time! Lucy weighs about 7 lbs. & vet wants her to be between 6-10 lbs no more no less. We feed Lucy a combination of Wet KD Prescription Can Food along with Salt Free French Style Green Beans, Bananas and Marshmellows as 'treats' or 'rewards'. Dezi eats Science Diet Small Bites for ADULT dogs plus Salt Free French Style Green Beans, Bananas and Marshmellows too! Dezi LOVES to hang out in the kitchen to see what if anything he can obtain when someone is cooking. He has been known to 'Climb' 'Jump' etc. to obtain HUMAN FOOD and since he was young discovered quickly that if you leave tomatoes on the counter or window sill he will FIND a way to get them (he thought they were balls to play with when he was a puppy) but tomatoes are not good for any dog to eat. Both dogs are accustomed to being boxed TOGETHER and prefer this. Lucy has urinary incontinence and requires frequent checking of her blanket & providing fresh clean ones. Because of her skin condition she cannot be bathed more than once every 10-15 days or it worsens her skin flaking. We are very afraid NO ONE will want Lucy and that we will be forced to euthanize her (and perhaps it is coming to that point as anyone who meets Lucy for the first time & does not know her story immediately thinks she needs to just be put out of her misery as she also has a back issue too besides everything else). We are prepared emotionally to do this if no one will take both dogs quickly. (Less)

I have a pretty great disposition and am a very friendly guy. I am not really a fan of being picked up, but I don't mind interacting with humans at all. Please come see me at the shelter!     Dachshund Dogs can make good pets in Ohio if they match your IifestyIe. The Dachshund is a long, short-legged dog with a temperament similar to that of a terrier. Dachshunds are cheeky, playful, mischievous, and resistant to training or discipline. Dachshunds do well with older children. Dachshunds are well suited to apartment life but need exercise, and it is important that they not be overfed as this breed is prone to weight gain.
