Dachshund    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Gabby was born about August 16, 2007 and weighs about 10 lbs. Gabby loves to run and play and best of all - CUDDLE!!! This girl just adores her humans and would be perfect for a retired couple. Small children can make her nervous if they get in her face so visiting children over 5 would be best. She is wonderful with the other dogs and she's doing well on house training, but with another change you may have a little work ahead. Also, many of these small dogs benefit from having a potty floor pad handy when they just can't hold it. She's a teeny, tiny, cutie that promises to keep you warm in the winter

Dachshund    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Moxie was born about March 19, 2012 and weighs about 8 lbs. She is wonderful with the other dogs, but is a little shy of us humans. She is getting better, and more trusting, every day. Every mill dog does best going into a home with another 'normal' dog so they learn how cool us humans really are and not to be timid of all the new things they need to learn in life. A woman that has befriended a group of millers in central New York has promised to see nothing, hear nothing, and say nothing as long as the millers hand dogs over to her once they are through with them instead of killing them. She then distributes the 'used' dogs to rescues ... (Read More)and sends many here. This group was pretty happy to be here from the beginning and fell in love with us humans quickly. We will be working on house training, but surely you will have work to do in this area and we have wonderful notes to help you. These are notes that have had the best success with mill dogs. Adopting one of these dogs is not so much about you as it is about the dog, it is an amazingly unselfish thing to do. You will be rewarded in the long run, but it may take a bit of time for them to adjust. (Less)

Dachshund Mix    Age: Senior

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sasha, a pint sized, brindle, senior pittie that looks more like a giant dachshund. Sasha sports a large dog attitude in a small package. She has the cutest stubby legs, long and thick torso, and tiny little head. Her grey muzzle completes the package, giving her a distinguished look. At ten, she shows her maturity in her ability to walk well on the leash, do her business outside and remain friendly toward other canine friends. While Sasha might be on the older end of the scale, she is still very active. Sasha is looking for someone that will spoil her in her golden years and lend her their lap every once in awhile. All of our animals are ... (Read More)examined by a veterinarian, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, heartworm tested and treated if necessary.     Shelby is an amazing dog. She has been apart of our family since we adopted her as a puppy. She has an active personality that loves to sniff and explore. However as we have introduced two children into our family, she hasn't adapted as well as we would have liked. We know she is a great dog that is very happy lying in the sun or exploring the outside, but she isn't a big fan of children. A perfect adopter would be someone without children who would like a companion for walks and snuggles.

Dachshund Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Adoption Fee: $275.00 + $35.00 for a health certificate if going over state lines (required by law). Dogs adopted in New England are subject to additional rules and regulations by the state departments of agriculture. Complying with these regulations is expensive for our rescue, and all dogs adopted in New England states are subject to an additional $125 fee to help cover a portion of these expenses. This handsome, gentle, tan and white colored, two year old with glorious yellow eyes is lovebug Dexter. At his first meeting with his foster mom and two small foster siblings, there was an immediate bonding and no hesitation of joining the ... (Read More)family. While shy when meeting new humans and dogs, he warms quickly. He prefers women to men but with assuarance, he becomes comfortable and trusting. Dexter moves well on a leash either alone or with other dogs, listens, and walks without pulling. He picks up quickly on basic commands like come, sit, stay, and off. He is independent yet loves being a couch potato with anyone that will accommodate and if allowed, will slide into bed for the night snuggling as close to you as possible. Dexter is housetrained but is a leg lifter. With continued corection/suggestions he has almost eliminated that habit. He does not play with toys but, like a puppy, loves to romp, run, leap and jump with the sibling dogs. He is up to date on all immunizations, neutered, microchipped, negative for heartworms, and most recently received a dental cleaning. This dog will adjust easily to all households and thrives on attention and love. Dexter is guaranteed to walk away with your heart after one meeting and, if chosen to become a member of your family, will be a true blessing! Rescue Me ID: 14-01-14-00470Peewee (male)

Dachshund    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Currently located in Long Island City (Queens), NY Peewee was picked up from the Manhattan ACC on Wednesday June 19, 2013. He was a mess with a badly infected mouth his whole chin/neck area is swollen with infection and saliva and blood back up, then in addition he had 2+ protein in his urine and blood so it was assumed to be s bladder or kidney stone(s) but the ultra sound was clear. All that in itself was a lot of infection to handle, but in addition to all that he had severe pneumonia as well. H e had his initial vet check up and blood drawn on June 20th and he is anemic and his white blood cell count was high, likely just due to ... (Read More)fighting off all the infection in his body. Then on Friday afternoon (June 21, 2013) Peewee's left anal gland burst, his prostate was found to be very enlarged (both issues due to him being unneutered), he had a 104 degree temperature, his left lung sounds 'harsh' which the chest X-rays confirmed was pneumonia. He was then on IV for fluids and antibiotics, and a feeding tube as he had not wanted to eat since he has been out of the shelter. Peewee ended up staying at the emergency vet from Friday June 21st- Thursday June 27th, the total of which was $942.58 (lower than the initial big estimate- thanks Pieper Olson!!!) Since his initial recovery Peewee has been neutered, had two dental cleanings (two premolars fell out between when I got him and his dental on July 12th, and then he had one molar extracted the second time), had x-rays and an ultra sound to try to determine why his urinalysis' were coming back off, additional re-checks, and cold laser therapy in December 2013 after he became paralyzed. This boy is a survivor, but he wouldn't have been able to even make it out of the shelter alive, or even survive the to see July 2013, had he not had the support people donating and sharing for him. However, Peewee is in need of your help again now to ensure he is healing well from his paralysis, getting an echocardiogram done if his heart murmur is still present off the meds, and then to follow up (again) on the issue of blood in his urine. He is good with other dogs and cats, and he would do great in an easy going home with a family that enjoys hanging out, and taking walks. lnteresting Dachshund Trivia Low-Cost New York Spay & Neuter Clinics
Dachshunds are good travel companions. Dachshunds are named for Dachs, the German term for Badger, which these dogs were bred to hunt. The short legs of a Dachshund are well suited for digging and getting inside badger burrows. Dachshunds are often referred to as wiener dogs because of their shape. Queen Victoria was fond of Dachshunds.
