|Animal ID: 20140725Deuce (male)|
Deuce is currently being fostered in SC. Adoption Fee: $250.00 + $35.00 for a health certificate if going over state lines (required by law). Dogs adopted in New England are subject to additional rules and regulations by the state departments of agriculture. Complying with these regulations is expensive for our rescue, and all dogs adopted in New England states are subject to an additional $125 fee to help cover a portion of these expenses. My name is Deuce. I was turned in at the local shelter because they said I snapped at a child. While I have been staying with my foster mom. She says I have been pretty well-behaved although I will snarl if you get between me and my food. Since I have been staying with my foster family, I have had a dental and the doc said he had to take a good many teeth but I still have plenty to eat kibble. I was also extremely on the heavy side. I have lost 3 pounds, too, so I am feeling much better with a clean mouth and a slimmer waist line. My foster mom has 2 grandsons that are 22 and 20 months and she said I do fine with them but they also do not pay me any attention. There are also children around all the time that range from 20 months to 14 years old and the only time I misbehave is if I am sitting on my foster mom's lap and want her to myself. My foster mom lets me know when I am not behaving by holding my mouth and she tells me 'no'. I am definitely a lap dog. I prefer to go outside with my foster mom to do my business so she says I would even do well with someone that likes to walk and that way I can continue my daily walking exercise and continue to lose some weight and then maintain my manly shape. I don't play much with toys. I am just a great companion and love to be sitting in your lap or right next to you. I get along fine with my other fur foster sisters but I like for them to know that my foster mom is MINE. My foster mom has a cat named Jackson. Most days I am good with Jackson but then Jackson will get right beside me and acts like he wants to play so I chase him. My foster mom always makes me stop. My foster dad doesn't like furbabies in the bed so I am sleeping on the floor in one of the beds and I usually choose to sleep with one of my fursiblings. I also would LOVE to sleep in the big bed but my foster mom says that I could never be in a bed without someone picking me up and putting me on the bed or putting me off the bed. She said if I jump off the bed, I could hurt my back. I ' m not supposed to go up and down stairs, either. My foster mom says that although I am ok with children, she thinks the ultimate home for me would be one that has older children or even a retired couple that just wants a love bug. If there is another dog in the house, they just need to know that I will probably be boss. |Rescue Me ID: 14-09-01-00106ELLA (female)|
Pretty girl ELLA was found left to fend for herself on a deserted county fairground, long after the festivities were over...We here at Schultz Senior Dachshund Sanctuary just cannot imagine her confusion, sadness and despair at being left behind by her 'owner.' ELLA is mending her broken heart here at our sanctuary, and is receiving treatment for Lyme Disease. In the short time she has graced us with her presence, we have already seen an improvement in her spirits and overall health. Though ELLA is not quite ready to GO HOME yet, applications will be accepted by serious adopters only, who can offer ELLA the forever commitment of companionship she deserves. ELLA is house-trained, and enjoys her outdoor walks on leash, or off, in protectively-fenced yard. ELLA said to mention that her favorite time of day is mealtime; her future home would need to be aware that she should be fed away from other pets. She hopes to overcome this obstacle in her behavior once she is assured that yes indeed, she no longer has to hunt scraps on an empty fairground for her next meal.... (Less)

|Rescue Me ID: 14-09-01-00076PENNY (female)|
Precious PENNY was taken into sanctuary by our organization from a shelter in New Hampshire to which she had been relinquished by an owner who was too ill to care for Penny any longer. Though the shelter is a no-kill facility (it does not euthanize for health issues, or lack of space to keep an animal), Penny would have spent the rest of her life in a wire cage. We did not think this was a good option for Penny, and brought her here to the safety of our sanctuary. Penny is working with a foster family experienced with blind dogs, and is doing VERY well! Curious, fun, and friendly, Penny does not know her own disability. She enjoys her time outdoors on-leash, and is a total snuggle-bug with her foster mother in the evening hours. Any adopter must remember that they will be Penny's 'eyes' for a very long time, and must be willing to make that commitment; therefore, we are taking SERIOUS inquiries only. PENNY said to say she would prefer a quiet home, with not too many other animals (dogs & cats are ok by her, though!). She also said to remind you that if you are the kind of person who likes to move furniture around, you might not be the choice of companions for her! She relies on scent and familiarity of her home setting to get around, and to be THE BEST girl she can be! Contact by email is best; home visit and veterinary references will be required for her safety and protection. (Less)

|PIease Read Before Adopting a Dachshund in New Jersey|
Dachshund Dogs can make good pets in New Jersey if they match your IifestyIe. The Dachshund is a long, short-legged dog with a temperament similar to that of a terrier. Dachshunds are cheeky, playful, mischievous, and resistant to training or discipline. Dachshunds do well with older children. Dachshunds are well suited to apartment life but need exercise, and it is important that they not be overfed as this breed is prone to weight gain.
