Without physical and mental stimulation, herding dogs cannot be their best selves. Simon needs a home that understands that. He would do best with someone who has the experience with dogs to let him know he does not have to be the guard and that you are the boss. He could also benefit from obedience training. Simon would do best in a quiet home with adults who have experience with dogs. He is about 2 years old and weighs 20 lbs. Simon is fully vetted including all shots ... (Read More)and neuter. Dachshund    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults

Hi I'm Cherry and I'm definitely a happy girl - nothing is going to get me down! I'm a 3-year-old miniature tan dapple dachshund and weigh about 20 lbs. I've NEVER met a stranger - I love all dogs and all people (big and small) - I'm GREAT with children! So far, I haven't been convinced that cats are my friends, so I'd probably do best in a house without them. I'm a smart girl and I'm completely housetrained and will let you know if I need to go outside! I'm always up for anything: if you want to be goofy and play, that's one of my favorite activities! If you want to cuddle and watch TV, I'm REALLY good at that, too. So please let me know if ... (Read More)you're looking for an easy-going forever friend to give you unconditional love! Rescue Me ID: 16-07-31-00274Jake (male)

Dachshund Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Our Jake has a harrowing story to tell and he has a right to be pretty peeved about it! He is the victim of human abuse, having been kicked in the jaw so hard, he needed surgical repair of his shattered mandible. After enduring a procedure that inserted a metal plate to stabilize his jaw, Jake came to us for R&R, but his jaw wasn't all that needed healing. When Jake arrived over a year ago, his spirit was in tatters. He was very slow to trust and understandably hypersensitive about anyone touching his head or neck, near his incision site. After three months of going slow, and allowing Jake to warm to our touch, he had to endure a second ... (Read More)procedure: sedated X-rays, and then a dental surgery to remove a cracked tooth related to the same injury. Now that several months have passed, and Jake's injury has healed, we suspect that he has some ongoing soft tissue tenderness. He still has some slight sensitivity, and can become snappy when handled by the collar. A Halti or 'no slip' harness is most suitable for him, and he has adapted to it very well. Based on his appearance, Jake appears to be a mix of long haired Miniature Dachshund and Sheltie. He is a tiny boy and weighs just 11 pounds, He has the elongated spine that we see in the Dachshund, and the tricolor Sheltie style fluffy coat. We've had him groomed several times, and he has done surprisingly well with that sort of handling, despite his history, and has also been a fairly good sport during all of his Vet visits. Still, it's best that adopters seek out a seasoned Groomer and Vet used to handling fragile rescue dogs. The ideal home for Jake is undoubtedly a quiet one, with patient adults who understand how to slowly build a lasting bond, and repair trust with a broken rescue dog. Jake is not likely to give a Disney moment at the adoption, but his folks will be rewarded with slow and steady progress, as Jake moves past his trauma. We don't think that he is suitable for a busy family with small children, or a hectic multi-dog home. Jake seems to respond best to peace and quiet. He's gotten to the point here, that he will sleep on the couch, roll over on his back, with exposed belly, but only after things have settled down and the environment is quiet. He could live peacefully with one other small, calm dog, and we think he would be a good companion for a dog savvy cat. Jake has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during Jake's transition to a new home. He is in excellent health, and is at an ideal, lean body weight of 11 pounds. He has been neutered, and has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and Canine Flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, and and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick. If you are interested in Jake, please write to Denise@eskiesonline.com or call Denise at 860-908-9738 for more info. Rescue Me ID: 16-06-28-00075Jaxson (male)

Dachshund Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Our robust boy, Jaxson, is a whole lotta dog! He came to us from a young girl in our town who had lost her job and apartment. This young lady was in the process of reinventing herself, and asked us to watch Jaxson temporarily while she got her act together. We agreed, but now, six months later, her new life is not going to accommodate Jaxson, and we've been asked to find him a forever home. Jaxson is a compact, muscular mix of Beagle and Standard Dachshund. He came to us obese at 63 pounds, but has slimmed down nicely to 49. Jaxson has a stocky, muscular build with the characteristic short legs, paddle feet and elongated spine, as well as ... (Read More)the rich, russet coloring, that we see in Standard sized Dachshunds. We just love this dog! He has a fantastic personality and has made lightning progress in his training program. When we first met Jaxson, he was wary of strangers, and was not at all shy about expressing his opinion in inappropriate situations. Now, after some basic leadership and consistent training, Jaxson accompanies his Foster Dad on errands to Home Depot, Tractor Supply, etc, and is now welcome wherever he goes. Jaxson is accepting of strangers and is quick to submit for belly rubs. In the hands of motivated adopters, he could easily earn his Canine Good Citizen certification. Jaxson would be ideally suited to an active single or couple, who can meet his exercise and training needs. Jaxson is lively dog, and needs a couple of brisk leash walks each day, as well as consistent work on his obedience commands. He has a double dose of Scent Hound DNA and requires mental, as well as, physical stimulation to maintain balanced behavior. He needs a strong pack leader, who has the time and inclination to continue him on his path to Canine Good Citizenship. Jaxson could easily join another dog home with a pack that is balanced, socialized and well trained. We don't think he would be suitable for a busy family with children. Jaxson has good house manners and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. He is in optimal health and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus), and canine flu. He has been boostered as needed. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed, and microchipped. Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis,
 Seizures, Abused/Neglected

[Read About Natural Seizure Care] Available for adoption in Manchester, CT Peewee has now been waiting to be adopted for nearly 3 years! Peewee is now almost 14 years old and has been waiting for his forever home since he was pulled from the Manhattan ACC on June 19, 2013!! Peewee needs to go to a calm home that is experienced with Dachshunds- Peewee is the epitome of the breed: tenacious, smart, and stubborn- he needs someone who will be all that right back at him in order for him to be happy and feel at home. Please read his information in full before inquiring, but if you may be interested in adopting, please email ... (Read More)upsndownsrescue@gmail.com or submit an application online at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ISDGDHUVd94aX7q0c0E59NU3ttRjcb9YHc0x4KxRgFw/viewform Peewee has come a long way since the day I picked him up from the Manhattan shelter, June 19, 2013. He had been medically neglected and was a very sick boy who spent his first week 'with me' at the Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center ER vet. He is now a fully medically cared for boy, and happy. Here is Peewee's original thread: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=624048330941383&set=a.626806993998850.1073741961.152876678058553&type=3&theater Here is his photo album on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UpsNDowns-Rescue-152910554852236/photos_stream?tab=photos_albums On December 17, 2013 Peewee became paralyzed, as many Dachshunds do at one point or another. After a couple sessions of cold laser therapy ($35/ session) and crate rest he is starting to walk again but was still in sporadic pain and not getting full coordination back. On January 28, 2014 Peewee had surgery to clean up disk material between his T11, T12, T13, L1 and L2 disks. Prior to surgery he also had to have an echocardiogram done due to his heart murmur going from 1 to a 4/5 (highest grade is 6) in just 1 month and is now on enalipril (a low cost heart/blood pressure maintenance pill), and his murmur is back very low; this increase may have been due to the stress of moving around from foster to foster, in conjunction with the meds he was on for his back prior to surgery. Peewee did physical therapy after surgery and did well. He has control over his bodily functions and also uses a peepad religiously if one is down indoors, and in the same spot each time. He is also dog door and crate trained. Peewee has recovered from his paralysis, but continues to have a 'drunken sailor' walk. He enjoys running in the yard, but does not like going on walks. On September 1, 2015 Peewee had a seizure. A few days later he had an MRI and there was nothing significant to show why the seizure had occurred, but he is on preventative meds for now, and after a good second follow up appointment is on a lower dose. See full story for this episode at www.GoFundMe.com/Save-Peewee Peewee requires enalipril daily for his heart, an inexpensive medication, and is also currently on an anti-seizure med as a precaution- which we hope to wean him off over the next few months. Peewee is housebroken and pee pad trained, and good with calm, confident and respectful cats and dogs. Due to his anxiety around high energy and unpredictable energy he should not be around small children, and requires an adult only home. He weighs between 12.5 and 13lbs at his ideal weight. (Less)

Dachshunds are cheeky, playful, mischievous, and resistant to training or discipline. Dachshunds do well with older children. Dachshunds are well suited to apartment life but need exercise, and it is important that they not be overfed as this breed is prone to weight gain.
